ATTACK ON THE SOVIET UNION

|
The Attack on the Soviet Union is the direct violation of the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact that was made on 1939. In other terms, Germany ended up trying to invade Soviet Union with Hitler being overconfident with how he perceived their army (weak). Not to mention, he believed that Britain was only remaining in the war, because they suspected that the Soviet Union to shift sides and join in their effort on the Allies side. Therefore if they successfully invaded the Soviet Union, Britain's 'last hope' would be crushed.
So on June 22, 1941, he began his invasion, believing he could overtake the country before winter could strike. The massive attack ran along about 1,800 miles long - beginning successful for the most part as German troops moved quickly, capturing 2 million Russian soldiers. By November, one of the Germany armies had managed to sweep through Ukraine, a second army was besieging the city of Leningrad, and a third was within 25 miles of Moscow. Things were looking good for Germany, that is until winter hit early and the Soviets started to show more resistance.
Germany was not prepared for the brutal Russian winter, believing that they could have won an easy victory. For the first time during the war, they were put to a halt and were defeated in December by a counter-attack by one of the Soviet armies.
So in summarization, Germany attacked Soviet Union due to Hitler being overconfident about how he perceived their army and how he believed that Britain was only remaining in the war, because they expected help from help from the Soviet Union. Problems that occurred when he attacked the Soviet Union was that it was not an easy win as he had expected. They were not prepared for winter and the Soviet army showed resistance. They were defeated easily in a counterattack in December, for the first time in the war.
